Juniper Incense: Ancient Protection for Home, Hearth & Soul

Juniper Incense: Ancient Protection for Home, Hearth & Soul

In Northern Germany, the Juniper (Juniperus communis) is often the companion of the beautiful Scots Pine, whose resin we can also use wonderfully for incense. In my own natural garden, a pine tree grows. Recently, for the first time, she gave me her pure resin. It was only a small drop, but it was incredibly precious to me.

There is an old saying that if weary wanderers sat down under a Juniper bush to rest a while, they would be able to continue their journey in good spirits and renewed strength in no time at all.

Juniper in Folklore: Protection & Magic

Folk Names The many German folk names indicate its deep magical significance:

  • Kranewitt (Crane Wood / Mystical Wood)

  • Weckholder (The Awakener)

  • Stechbaum (Stinging Tree)

  • Feuerbaum (Fire Tree)

  • Weihrauchbaum (Incense Tree)

Protection for House & Farm

  • The Entrance: A Juniper bush planted to the right of the front door protected against burglary, malicious gossip, and bewitchment. Those who did not have a front garden would hang Juniper branches over the front door.

  • The Threshold: Dried Juniper berries were placed under door thresholds so that ill-intentioned people could not gain entry.

  • The Foundation: In Northern Germany, it was a long-standing tradition to bury a Juniper bush under the cornerstone when building a house. This preserved the home from evil spirits.

Amulets & Personal Protection

For a personal amulet, Juniper berries were dried, strung onto a thread like a necklace, and worn around the neck. It was believed to protect against contagious diseases.

Connection to Ancestors & Gods

Among our ancestors, the Juniper was a highly esteemed plant.

  • Respect: People would tip their hats when passing a Juniper, just as they did for the Elder tree. It was believed that the ancestors lived on within the Juniper.

  • The Underworld: In pagan times, it was believed that the Juniper marked the entrance to the Underworld.

  • Cremation: The ancient Germanic tribes used Juniper wood to cremate their dead.

  • Prophecy: It is even said to possess the gift of granting visions of the future.

Warding off Witches & Demons

It is said that witches and demons used Juniper for their sorcery. To counter this, people hung Juniper branches over the entrances to the house and stable—fighting fire with fire.

The Juniper as Powerful Incense

It is suspected that people were already fumigating with Juniper in the Stone Age. Perhaps the people of that time burned Juniper wood for a campfire and noticed that it had a very intense scent, thus becoming magical in their imagination. Smoking with Juniper has a long tradition.

  • Epidemics: It was used during past plague epidemics.

  • Disinfection: It was used to disinfect medieval sickrooms. Juniper berries on glowing coals were carried through the patient’s room in incense pans.

The Spiritual Effect A Juniper fumigation wards off all kinds of evil. Symbolically, this incense shows wandering souls their way back. Especially during the Rauhnächte (The 12 Holy Nights), Juniper is used in incense blends to avert all bad things. It keeps human envy at bay and drives away witches, demons, and the illnesses and curses conjured by them. It has kept its magic to this day.

Modern Incense Lore

  • Courage & Strength: Juniper gives us the courage to tackle new things. It gives strength and confidence.

  • Letting Go: It helps to release emotions that create dependency.

  • Cleansing Feelings: An incense ritual with Juniper wood cleanses the emotional world if one has picked up bad vibrations from other people.

  • Alertness: Juniper strengthens our attention. It wakes up our mind (“Weckholder”) and is even said to bestow the gift of prophecy.

  • Recharging: Juniper incense is particularly well suited to recharge people and rooms with new life energy.

How to Smoke Cleanse a Room

Since Juniper smoke has a very strong cleansing property, fumigations with it are preferred to purify rooms or houses—be it from lingering illness or negative energies.

The Ritual:

  1. Take a tablespoon of crushed Juniper berries.

  2. Place them on the glowing incense charcoal.

  3. Carry the smoking vessel from room to room. Do not forget the corners!

  4. Let the smoke unfold its effect in the room for a little while.

  5. Then, open the windows wide (shock ventilation) to release the smoke—and the negativity—outside.

This incense ritual is good for colds and can be performed up to three times a week to get negative energies out of the house.

My Personal Recommendation: Juniper Water

“To protect yourself or your home, you can prepare a Juniper Water. Boil twigs and berries in water and let them steep overnight. Sprinkle (asperge) yourself or your home with this holy water before you perform an incense ceremony with Juniper. Thus, everything shall be protected from negative energies.”

Harvesting & Mixing

Conservation Note: Before you go looking for a Juniper in the wild, I want to write that in Germany, the Juniper is often under nature protection. Please buy your Juniper berries or wood in a specialized shop; preferably in organic quality, of course. Perhaps you have a Juniper in your own garden or a neighbor’s.

  • Harvest Time: In incense lore, the harvest time is at sunrise at the end of July, or in the winter months, such as the Winter Solstice and the Rauhnächte.

  • Parts Used: Berries, needles, and branch tips are used. Everything must be dried beforehand.

  • Scent: It emits a strong, warm, aromatic, and resinous smell when burned.

  • Blends: Juniper mixes well with Pine, Moss, and Oak to create a powerful incense blend.
