🌹The Hedgerow Rose: Magic, Smoke Cleansing & Blossom Charms
In this article, I will introduce you to the hedgerow rose (Heckenrose) in the realm of plant magic. This powerful plant has many names: hedge thorn (Hagdorn), sleep thorn (Schlafdorn), dog rose (Hundsrose), or quite simply rosehip (Hagebutte).
The Warding Thorns: Because prickly and thorny plants forcefully repel any dark magic in ancient plant lore, this plant was abundantly planted around houses and farmsteads. Just like the hawthorn, blackberry, and blackthorn. Hence its traditional name Hagdorn or Hagedorn. Hag stems from the old word for fence or enclosure. Our ancestors also revered the rosehip as Frigga’s thorn (Friggadorn).
The Ancient Hedges: Even today, you can still see these protective thorn hedges standing guard at old houses. We also have abundant thorn bushes here that carry immense age. They grow so dense and firm that one could never pass through them.

The old belief of plant magic says: the deeper and denser the thorny hedge, the healthier and deeper the sleep of the homeowners.
The Guardian of Rest: The ancestral belief of the sleep apple (Schlafapfel) apparently traces back to this exact thought—that the impenetrable hedgerow rose fiercely protects the house and farm day and night, and has thus become a true symbol of peaceful sleep.

🛡️ Protection for House & Farmstead
Against Trudes & Witches: Entire wreaths made from the branches of the hedgerow rose were hung on the front doors to fiercely protect the homeowners from the trudes (night hags). Against witches, bright red rosehips were buried right under the door thresholds; this prevented them from entering the house.
Against Lightning & Thunder: The mighty thorns also protect the house from lightning and thunder.
Protection of the Animals: Animals were given rosehip powder to eat in order to obtain the highest possible protection for them. A branch of the hedgerow rose fastened above the entrance of the chicken coop kept the chickens from being stolen in the dark of night. Cows had their backs gently stroked with these branches so that they would not be enchanted by a witch and give bad milk or none at all.
💀 The Rose, Death & The Germanic Tribes
Among the ancient Germanic tribes, the wood of the hedgerow rose could never be missing from any death ceremony, such as the sacred cremation.
The Sacred Groves: Therefore, the hedgerow rose stood in deep connection with death and was found abundantly near ancient megalithic tombs and sacrificial sites.
The Foretelling: For this very reason, roses were never to be brought to a sick person, because that would directly foretell their passing.

Among the Sinti and Roma, the hedgerow rose played a profound role in ancient plant magic.
Sealed Enchantments: For example, they spoke their magical incantations directly into the hedgerow rose. A bottle filled with enchanted water was securely sealed with a cork made from the wood of the hedgerow rose.
Thorns & Stones: Nine thorns and nine stones protect against malicious gossip. Phantoms and witches live beneath the hedgerow rose and could seamlessly transform themselves into rosehip bushes.

The New Year’s Custom: A profound old belief of our ancestors around the turn of the year was the consumption of one or three raw rosehips on an empty stomach. This ancestral knowledge protected against stomach ailments, toothaches, gout, and sore throats in the following year. These rosehips were also passed on to children and friends without speaking a single word.
Against Illness: People also crawled directly through the thorny hedge bushes, reciting old healing spells, to be protected from certain illnesses or to physically strip the sickness away on the sharp thorns.
The Harvest Oracle: In the agriculture of that time, the old lore held: If the hedgerow roses bloom abundantly, the grape harvest will be wonderfully lush. If the rosehips appear in great, heavy numbers, a harsh winter is to be expected.

Smoke-cleansing with rosehips belongs to every true love ritual. We can use the dried rosehips, the delicate petals, or even the wood itself. Among the Celts, the thorny branches were traditionally used.
Inner Peace: A rosehip incense has a deeply calming effect on our spirit and is relaxing at the exact same time. Through this sacred smoke, we reach a point where we truly forgive and reconcile with ourselves. We attain deep wisdom.
✨ Spells of Love & The Heart’s Oracle
Opening the Heart: Burning rosehips was used in earlier times for specific love incenses. For example, when a man could not surrender to his own feelings. This sacred smoke made him sensitive to his true emotions and desires. It beautifully restores our deep trust in our own sexuality.
The Love Oracle: Young girls would write the names of three boys they wished to marry on three fresh rose petals. The rose petal that remained green the longest securely revealed the future groom.

The Love Blend: Dried rosehips blend wonderfully with forest frankincense (spruce resin) or even pine resin, apple seeds, jasmine blossoms, and rose petals to create a powerful incense for love.

The hedgerow rose and its bright red rosehips were deeply dedicated to the Goddess Fria (Frigga), which can be clearly seen in its ancient name, Frigga’s thorn (Friggadorn). According to the Old Belief, this beautiful, powerful plant spirit was therefore only allowed to be gathered on a Friday.
🍯 Edible Magic: The Wild Rose Jelly
Years ago, I was gifted a small jar of rose jelly by an acquaintance. I spread it on some bread with quark (Speisequark) and have been absolutely enchanted ever since. I have rarely eaten anything so incredibly delicious. Therefore, I would love to share this beautiful recipe with you here.
The Sacred Harvest: For this recipe, you will need about 300g of wild rose petals—ideally from pink-blooming roses with slightly larger blossoms that are intensely fragrant. The rugosa rose (Kartoffel-Rose) or the Damask rose is best suited for this. The blossoms must have a very intense scent; otherwise, you will not capture that deep, magical rose flavor in your jelly.
The Preparation:
No Washing: The delicate petals are not washed, because they would absorb far too much water and lose their essence.
The Infusion: The rose petals are placed into a pot and covered with two liters of red or light grape juice. Let this mixture steep for four hours, stirring it occasionally.
The Simmer: Afterward, heat it briefly and then carefully gather and remove the rose petals from the pot.
The Sweetness: Mix this precious liquid with 1000g of jam sugar (Gelierzucker 2:1) and let it simmer, bubbling gently, for about three minutes.
The Gel Test: Place a teaspoon of the hot jelly onto a cold plate. If it sets and becomes firm after a short time, it is ready.
The Magic in Jars: Then simply pour it into sterilized jars, and your enchanting rose jelly is finished. It is perfectly suited as a spread on bread, paired with cheese, or as a refined, magical ingredient in desserts.
